Eliza and the Delusionals took off in 2019. Their song “Just Exist” became the Alt Nation critical cut and quickly jumped up to peak at number one on the alternative Sirius XM station. We had the chance to talk to the Australian band about their start and new EP!

How did your band get started? Where did the ‘delusionals’ part come from?

Kurt and I have known each other since we were kids. There’s photos of us together in primary school haha. Kurt was playing in another band a few years ago with some school friends and we re connected and started playing music together. I met Tex at university though some mutual friends. We were doing our first East Coast Australian tour and the guy who was playing at the time decided to leave, so Tex jumped on last minute and the rest is history. Our newest member Ruby was actually playing in a band that opened for our single release show, and we thought she was so cool we had to ask her to be a part of the band.

The ‘Delusionals’ part was inspired by a line in a Blink-182 song that I liked. I thought it was a cool word, but if I could go back in time I’d probably change it to something easier to pronounce haha.

What song are you most proud of on your debut EP, “The Deeper End?”

I think my favourite song on that EP was always ‘Cigarette.’ It’s always so much fun to play live and I think it’s a cool song. If someone else wrote it I would probably listen to it all the time.

Congratulations on your #1 spot on Alt Nation with “Just Exist!” How does it feel to achieve that?

Firstly, thank you. It’s just crazy. Being from Australia we didn’t really know much about Alt Nation or what it was, and then all of a sudden we get floods of comments and messages from people saying they heard the song on there. Until we were actually able to go and visit Alt Nation in New York in December, we were pretty much living through the comments on Instagram to paint a picture of what was actually happening. It’s all really crazy.

What was the inspiration behind the “Just Exist” video?

Since things had happened really quickly for us with the song in the US, we had a really short amount of time to put something together. We just filmed ourselves doing random things in our hometown over a few days and put it together with some footage of us playing and it just fell into place.

Thank you so much, and congratulations again!
