Dope By Accident has a lot to celebrate this week.
Old Town Road by Lil Nas X has been certified diamond – and Dope By Accident was a writer for it. “This song changed my life in a matter of months! So blessed to have been apart [sic] of a DIAMOND Record!” she posted on Instagram. The inspiration was immediate, she said to Billboard. “I got in the studio, heard the song, and our juices started flowing, man.”
But Dope By Accident – aka Jo’zzy – has been doing this for awhile. Originally from Memphis, TN, she moved to Florida to become Timbaland’s protege. She’s written for artists on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label, as well as for artists including Monica, Chris Brown, and even the queen herself, Beyonce. (She had to remove a photo of Jay-Z and Beyonce at the session.)
Dope By Accident is also a face of the LGBT+ movement. She performed at GLAAD’s Spirit Day Concert to raise awareness of bullying in the community alongside artists including Justin Tranter. “Why do people care who somebody loves?” she asked in her interview with Billboard. She also praised artists Frank Ocean and Sam Smith for owning their sexuality.
In the near future: she’ll be performing on the San Diego and Los Angeles shows of Summer Walker’s First and Last Tour. Don’t miss her – she’s going places.
