As Pride Month comes to a close, we at Girls Behind the Rock Show want to celebrate musicians who have made great strides and offered representation to women and non-binary folx everywhere.
Janelle Monae lives her life as fluidly as possible, both musically and personally. The singer, rapper, actress, and producer known for blending elements of R&B, rock, hip-hop, and soul in her music as well as her creative and androgynous outfits, publicly identifies with both bisexuality and pansexuality. Her Prince-inspired song “Make Me Feel” explores her experience with her sexuality, serving as loud-and-proud representation for those who identify as both Black and LGBT. Monae expresses pride in her fluid sexuality, saying “Being a queer black woman in America…someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker.”
